Mrs Paula Chinwe Okafor Prize for Creative Non-Fiction
Crater Library& Publisher invites submissions for the second edition of Mrs Paula Chinwe Okafor Prize for Creative Non-Fiction.
The prize, which is worth NGN200,000 recognizes distinction in Nigerian creative non-fiction.
It honors the life and work of Mrs Paula Chinwe Okafor (1956 -2016), an avid reader and a lover of the arts and literature. Young Nigerian women (ages 18-35) writing in English within creative non-fiction genre are eligible to enter the competition.
Such works must be distinguished by first-hand research, a clear narrative style with a well-crafted interpretive writing and a creative use of language or approach to the subject matter. Selection will be based on quality, originality, and the capacity of the story to remain undiminished by the passage of time.
The winner will be announced on the 14th of December at the Crater Literary Festival, Enugu.
Guidelines:
- Open to only Nigerian females (ages 18-35)
- Creative non-fiction (personal essay, memoir, travel writing, narrative journalism etc.)
- No restrictions about subject and theme. .
- Multiple entries are not accepted.
- This prize is only for unpublished writing. (Online publications and self published publications are ineligible).
- Crater Library & Publisher reserves the right to disqualify any entry that breaches these guidelines.
Format:
- Entries may range from 3500-5000 words in length, 12 font size and Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing.
- All pages must be paginated.
- Preferred file formats of entries: PDF
- PDF entries should have title (placed center) and word count (placed far right)
- The body of the email shall include a short bio stating name, year of birth, address (place and state of residence), phone number and title of entry.
- Submit entry to “litfest@thecraterlibrary.com“.
- Subject title of email must be “Entry for 2019 Mrs. Paula Chinwe Okafor Prize for Creative Non-Fiction”

Dr Emmanuel C. Adukwu Prize for Literature
Crater Library & Publisher invites short stories and poetry submissions from secondary school students in Enugu state.
Dr Emmanuel C. Adukwu Prize for Literature seeks to encourage and reward students who show a strong voice and excellent literary vision. This is the maiden edition of the award and it is being administered by the Crater Library & Publisher.
The theme for 2019 edition of the Dr. Emmanuel C. Adukwu Prize for Literature is ‘The Mask We Wear’.
Students are expected to explore narratives that irradiate the struggle of the Nigerian teenager in walking the path of discovery either prescribed by society or self.
Winning entry shall be awarded a school support fund of N50,000 and will be published on the AfricaWeek UK blog and Crater Library & Publisher Blog. School from which the winning entry emerged shall also get a donation of books for their school library.
The winner and his/her school shall be recognised and awarded on the 14th of December at the 2019 Crater Literary Festival, Enugu.
Guidelines:
- Open to SS1-SS3 students in Enugu state.
- Creative writing for this prize covers only short story and poetry.
- Form teachers are expected to be very involved in coordinating the competition for their students.
- Every school is entitled to only 3 entries from its students.
- Multiple entries from same student is not allowed and if found out, shall be disqualified
- The prize is only for unpublished writing (online and self published publications are ineligible)
- Entries shall be collated by form teachers on 30th of October,2019.
- A representative of Crater Library & Publisher shall visit each school on the 31st of October, 2019 in order to collect all entries from form teachers.
- Crater Library & Publisher reserves the right to disqualify any entry that breaches the guidelines and format.
Format:
- Word count for short story should range from 3000 – 5000 words, while poems should not exceed 2 pages.
- All entries shall be printed on an A4paper.
- Accepted font is Times New Roman, font size is 12 with 5 spacing.
- All pages must be paginated.
- Student’s name, school and class with Form Teacher’s phone number shall be written on the top left of the paper.
- Title of entry shall be boldly written beneath the student’s info with word count placed on the far right.

Crater Literary Festival Book Pitch Competition
Crater Library & Publisher and AfricaWeek UK in partnership with iSERVE2050, invite submissions of book synopsis from non-fiction writers.
The competition is designed to attract and support a non-fiction writer with unique well-researched information and written content.
We are looking to support anon-fiction writer who is keen on providing an expository research on any original, relevant and current south east anthropology/social/cultural topic with the aim of contributing to intellectual literature and discourse on south east region of Nigeria.
*Best 3 synopses will be selected and notified to send in a minute pitch video before a final selection of the winner.
The writer with the winning synopsis will be awarded a research grant of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira),to enable him or her start, research and complete a book on which the synopsis is based. Terms and conditions shall apply.
The winner of this competition shall be announced and recognised on the 14th of December, at the 2019 Crater Literary Festival, Enugu
On completion of the book, Crater Library & Publisher reserves the exclusive right to publish it on its web library as an E-book and in print format.

- Font face and size: Times New Roman/12pt (2500 words) with 1.5 spacing.
- Synopsis should contain:
- Title
- Statement of problem;
- Scope of your study in terms of number of states to cover in south east Nigeria;
- Why readers should be interested in or care enough for your research;
- An outline of your content (summary of each chapter);
- Research methods to be used;
- Why you are qualified to write this e-book.
- Preferred file formats of entries: PDF
- In the body of the email, include YOUR NAME, STATE OF RESIDENT , TITLE OF YOUR BOOK, EMAIL ADDRESS, CONTACT ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER.
- Do not include your name in the synopsis. Any submission that violates this guideline will be automatically disqualified.
- Subject of the e-mail should read: ‘2019 Crater Literary Festival Book Pitch Competition’
