Lisa finally understood what Apostle James said concerning the tongue, that out of it will flow blessing and curses. She wondered how the very lips that said “I love you” say I hate you, the lips that once told you how beautiful you are, turns tomorrow to call you a curse or worse, an enemy. She stood before her bedroom mirror as she did her makeup. As much as she tried to hurry up she couldn’t help the tears, the incident just kept replaying in her head. How did the guy she fell in love with become so different all of a sudden, slowly she was dying but she just couldn’t cut out.
Fred was her sweetheart and getting married to him was a dream come true but she never expected the very person who meant the world to her become her worst nightmare.
She was lost in her thoughts that she didn’t know when Fred walked in.
‘Babe, i’m so sorry I laid my hands on you, I did not mean to. I lost my cool.’
‘Fred you are always losing your cool, for three years now that has been the story, am your wife not your punching bag,’ Lisa replied.
‘I know, hon. Please forgive me we will work through this,’ Fred replied.
She wasn’t sure anymore if she wanted to stay with him but her vow was for better or worse and her dad wasn’t ready to hear otherwise, because divorce wasn’t something Fred or her dad wanted to hear but three years of marriage that was full of pity, violence and abuse wasn’t what she bargained for when she took her vow.
‘Fred, I don’t think we should go to your office dinner. I’m not up for it,’ Lisa pleaded.
‘Hey, babe you must be joking. I can’t go without you and my employees will love to see my wife.’
‘But Fred….’
‘No! Lisa, you are going and that’s it. Do not get me angry,’ Fred yelled.
‘Okay,’ Lisa agreed. She turned to get her dress when Fred called back.
‘Babe, cover the bruises well, after all that’s why you a makeup artist and be done in five minutes.’
Lisa turned and nodded.
At the party, Fred proudly introduced his wife, he knew he had to make her feel good about herself after unleashing his anger on her, if there was anything, he loved her and marrying her was his blessing.
‘Babe, go hang around a bit, let me discuss with Mr Steve,’ Fred said and pecked her.
‘Okay hon,’ Lisa replied looking displeased but she was happy to leave.
She looked around and tried to find her friend Vivian who, overtime had become her sister; she felt someone grab her by the arm and drag her to the rest room.
She was about to yell when the person took off her veil. ‘Vivian, you scared me and why are you disguised,’ Lisa asked still looking scared.
‘Well darling, since you texted that you won’t be home I had to come here as promised and also come disguised, I don’t want Fred’s problem and neither do I want your body receiving the pain because you saw me again and..’
‘It’s enough. Vivian, stop talking, you know he is still my husband. Where is the stuff I asked for?’ Lisa asked
‘Vivian brought out a white container of drugs and handed it to Lisa. But Lisa why are you preventing yourself from getting pregnant, maybe a child could be the solution,’ Vivian asked.
‘Viv, a child isn’t the solution and I don’t know what the solution is. All I know is, I can’t bring a child into this harsh environment, I may not have the power to fight Fred, neither will my parents support me since Fred is practically the bread winner of my family. I mean I am who I am because of his investment and I got married in a church…..’ Lisa broke down in tears as she talked…..’and it’s for better for worse.’
‘Even though Lisa, you can …..,’ Lisa cut her in her speech.
‘ I can’t Viv. I just can’t but I can prevent myself from getting pregnant.’
‘ Lisa, are you okay, I saw you rushed in here or dragged, i’m not sure but babe are you fine,’ Fred called out.
Lisa placed her finger on her lips signaling Vivian to be quiet, she quickly poured the drugs in her vitamins container and handed the real container to Vivian and hugged her, she opened the door and walked out.
‘Sweetheart, i’m fine, and uuuhhmmm…. I wasn’t dragged here I was pressed so I ran here,’ Lisa replied.
‘Okay babe, let’s go home.’
‘But Fred the party isn’t over,’ Lisa said.
‘I know, but well, hon, we need to spend time together and am hungry,’ Fred said.
‘I did not cook Fred, and…’
Fred wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer. ‘Not that type of food and no but Lisa.’
‘Still Fred am not….’
Fred cut her in. ‘You know, Lisa, am your husband and you are nothing without me, okay! Everything you are exists because I married you and…’
‘Okay Fred, please just stop talking. My head is spinning and let’s not quarrel here, we are in public,’ Lisa said.
‘Okay love,’ he pecked her and they headed towards the car.
